Hongzixi Fm

Period:
Neoproterozoic

Age Interval:
early-Late Qingbaikouan (middle Tonian); Qb (53)

Province:
Guizhou

Type Locality and Naming

Northeast Guizhou. The Hongzixi Fm was named by the Guizhou Party of Regional Geological Survey in 1972 and was first quoted by the Guizhou Team of Stratigraphy and Palaeontology in 1976 (on Precambrian of Guizhou). The typical section is situated in Hongzixi, Jiangkou County and the reference section is in Kuaicheng and Dengpu in Jiangkou Couty, Guizhou Province. Lower-middle formation in the Banxi Gr.

Synonym: (红子溪组)

Lithology and Thickness

The Hongzixi Fm is subdivided into two members. First member is dominated by meta-conglomerate and sandy conglomerate, which is only 5 to 50 m thick in the typical area (near Hongzixi). Second (and main) member consists of variegated (red purple, grayish purple and greenish gray) sericite-slate, silty slate interbedded with sandy slate, intercalating with blasto-silty and fine sandstone, occasionally with blasto-tuff and commonly with lenticles of marl or micrite marble. The greenish gray slate in the base is often intercalated with thin-bedded siderite and the purple red slate in middle part occasionally contains copper minerals. This member is about 3974 m thick.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

The base rests unconformably on the underlying Huixiangping Fm of the Fanjingshan Gr

Upper contact

Overlain by the Qingshanjiang Fm

Regional extent

Northeast Guizhou. The Hongzixi Formation is restricted to southeast of Fanjing Mountain and correlatable to the horizon of the Madiyi Formation of the Banxi Group in Hunan Province. In northeast Guizhou (Songtao, Tongren, Jiangkou), the lower part of the former Banxi Gr is now called the Hongzixi Fm and the upper part also called as the Qingshuijiang Fm, which corresponds to the Wuqiangxi Fm in Hunan Province.

Age

early-Late Qingbaikouan (middle Tonian). On the schematic stratigraphic column, the Hongzixi Fm seems equivalent to the lower three formations (lower half) of the Xiajiang Gr, therefore is scaled accordingly for graphic purposes.
